The 33 mayors underwent drug test in line with the memorandum of Governor Ryan Luis Singson, who expressed support for President Rodrigo Duterte's war on illegal drugs.
They all tested negative, the governor confirmed during the election of new set of officials for the provincial chapter of the League of Municipalities.
“Masaya tayo na negatibo silang lahat. Dito maipapakit
a natin na hindi lang tayo basta salita dito sa Ilocos Sur, na seryoso talaga tayo na sugpuin ang iligal na droga,” Singson said.
However, the governor criticized Mayor Roque Verzosa Jr. of the town of Tagudin, the only mayor in the province who did not participate.
“Hindi natin alam kung bakit ba siya umiiwas. 2013 pa siya umiiwas sa drug test,” said Singson.
In a phone interview, Verzosa explained that already underwent a drug test earlier and tested negative.
“Sinabi ko naman sa secretary niya na tapos na ako sa drug testing. Check niya ang recods sa DOH ang resulta kasi. What for na pupunta ako, eh tapos na ako,” he said.
Singson and Versoza were opponents in the gubernatorial race in 2013. The young Singson won that election.
Meanwhile, all elected provincial officials also tested negative, but one employee of the capitol tested positive, and has now been removed from service
