After giving the Philippine Daily Inquirer a tongue-lashing, President Duterte is now accusing its owners of not paying billions in tax dues.
In a speech before the Filipino community in Saudi Arabia, Duterte said he would not sit down and talk with the Inquirer owners until they have paid up on their back taxes.
The Prietos own Golden Donuts Inc., the exclusive Philippine franchisee of the international brandDunkin’ Donuts.
“You know, Inquirer? Inquirer owes government one billion. Hanggang ngayon hindi pa binabayaran. And you know what? (Former Bureau of Internal Revenue Commissioner) Kim Henares, binitaw niya, sabi niya okay na,” said Duterte.
“So when I go back, I will raise hell. Kayong mga Inquirer, kayong mga crusaders kuno. Gusto ninyo tama lahat pero kayo hindi nagbabayad. Bayaran mo muna ‘yung one billion bago tayo mag-usap uli,” he added.
Duterte lumped the Prietos among the “oligarchs” who have been trying to bring him down.
“As long as there is no corruption, the Philippines will rise. Sigurado ‘yan. It was corruption that was bringing us down. At ngayon, pati ‘yung mga, the oligarchs of the Philippines. Yun ‘yun sila,” said Duterte. ”Ganon ‘yung mga oligarch.”
